Details On The Unreal Engine In Current Gen Fighters Revealed!!

If you’ve been keeping up with the latest development methods when it comes to the current generation of fighting games, then you have probably noticed the popular use of The Unreal Engine, a video game software development tool created by western company Epic Games.

What you may not have known is how the influence of its use came about and now we have an answer.

Recently, a blog on Gamasutra created by Author John Szczepaniak takes an excerpt from his book, The Untold History of Japanese Game Developers Vol.2,  of an interview with Taka Kawaski of Epic Games Japan.

In the interview Kawaski discusses his journey with selling the Unreal Engine license to Japan and the methods they used to attract Japanese developers and publishers.

He even goes into more details on how the engine was acquired for the upcoming Street Fighter V and the development of Tekken 7.

“It’s case by case and subject to project scheme. In some cases, such as Street Fighter V, Capcom buys Unreal Engine and lets Dimps – the developer – use it for development. We also have other cases, such as Kingdom Hearts III or Tekken 7, where publishers buy the engine and their internal teams use it.”

You can read the full interview with Kawaski here as he talks a little more about the process of convincing two giant fighting game developers to use the engine.
