We Rated This Years Fighting Games At E3!! Here Are The Results!!

E3 is over but the excitement that it has left from this year’s reveals are far from done as we look forward to the new titles that are coming our way between this and next year. We thought it would be a great idea to not only review whats to come but give each title a grade based on the overall information that has been revealed during last week!

Blade Strangers

Publisher: Nicalis

Developer: Studio Saisenzen

Grade: B-

+ Characters from well known videos games in a cross over collaboration usually makes for a good fighting game and also brings more awareness to the games that players may not be aware of.

+ The new art direction from Studio Saisenzen looks to give the game a pleasing aesthetic that both players who are fans or new to the characters of the different video games can enjoy. We have seen these same techniques used in other fighting games and they often have wonderful results.

+/-  Simple input gameplay could potentially make this an amazing title especially with the Nintendo Switch’s JoyCon controller. In the same token, the simple inputs for this fighting game could ultimately make this a game that players drop after a few weeks if there are not enough game play mechanics to push the interest for playing further.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT

Publisher: Square Enix

Developer: Koei Tecmo/Team Ninja

Grade: B+

+You just can not go wrong with having an all-star cast from one of the most popular Role Playing Games ever created and the fact that you will get all of the characters that Arcade goers had to wait for on console is definitely a plus in our books.

+NT will have 3 vs 3 team based game play available for online multiplayer matches though single and offline players will still be able to enjoy the game using CPU’s as their teammates.

-While we are glad that they showed off the game and have targeted a release for next year, the developers were pretty sparse on the info when it came to game modes for the console’s version.

Marvel Vs. Capcom Infinite

Publisher: Capcom

Developer: Capcom

Grade: D

+ The new mechanics for Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite are definitely a refreshing take on the series. The new active mode mechanic is very intuitive and feels very natural to do and the infinity stones add an extra touch to the game that will make for some very unique gameplay while giving some much needed depth for those looking for a challenge.

– The art direction for this title leaves a lot to be desired. Character models feel pretty basic and the animations do not feel as fluid as the previous offerings. We can only hope that the final version has improved overall from what we have seen in the story demo.

– The lack of legacy characters from the Marvel cast is highly disappointing to see and new cast members for this title are so far slim for the pickings. To add insult to injury, a potential favorite character has been confirmed as DLC which is not a good start if you are trying to interest people in purchasing this title in September.

Dragon Ball FighterZ

Publisher: Bandai Namco

Developer: Arc System Works

Grade: A+

+ Arc System Works finally developing a console game using the popular Dragon Ball franchise is by far a historical moment for not only fighting games but video games in general. ASW have shown countless times in the past that when you give them a popular IP, something amazing will come of it..even if it is broken.

+ The attention to the source material is astounding. Characters get launched into buildings if you land certain attacks leading into a K.O., environments destruct depending on what your character does during the match, Buu turns opponents into chocolate and eats them, it is as if they sucked every last detail from Dragon Ball and put it into this game and we just can’t stop from gushing about it.

+ From what we have seen thus far, game mechanics look very solid and there is going to be something here for players of all levels. ASW is looking to improve the original auto combo concept they introduced in Persona 4 Arena by making use of every attack button but making each combo have a different outcome. Despite these improvements, it will in no way take away from the hardcore element that ASW have prided themselves on which means fighting game veterans will enjoy the deep level of gameplay they have become accustomed to.
