Tekken X Street Fighter Development On Hold!!

5 years ago, Capcom unveiled their collaborative cross-over title Street Fighter X Tekken to a bunch of excited fans at Comic-Con.

During all the excitement Katsuhiro Harada, who was on hand during the reveal, announced that they would also be creating a cross-over title Tekken X Street Fighter which would bring iconic characters like Ryu into the 3D style of gameplay synonymous with the franchise.

Given the time lapse between now and when the plan to develop Tekken X Street Fighter was announced, many have wondered what the progress is on such an anticipated project and in a recent interview with Game Spot Harada opened up about why there hasn’t been much talk in regards to it.

“When we develop fighting games, we try to keep the core community in mind as well as the wider audience that wants to play these games. But currently the situation is with fighting games, you have Street Fighter V that just released–a lot of people are playing that fervently–and there’s a large crowd out there waiting or Tekken 7. We don’t want to split these communities, so a good window in which to release Tekken x Street Fighter is something that’s become difficult recently. So it’s on hold for the moment.”

This new information definitely has us wondering if Tekken X Street Fighter will ever be. Even during the time of  TXSF’s  initial announcement Harada and team were hard at work on Tekken Tag Tournament 2.

It would seem finding time to focus on a title that is outside of the traditional Tekken franchise is a challenging one. Even now, we are still on stand by for any official home console release date for Tekken 7 Fated Retribution, a title that will be featuring one of Street Fighters most cherished characters in Akuma.

Seeing Akuma’s Tekken version in action is very much a telling display as to what team Tekken may have in mind when it comes to introducing the cast of Street Fighter into their highly lauded franchise.

Our take is that the release of Tekken X Street Fighter is very far off in the distant future and given what may be at stake for both the Street Fighter V and Tekken 7 franchise respectively, we may not see this cross-over come to fruition until closer to the end of this current generations life cycle…that is if we see this title come at all.
