FGO Year End Review!!

Whew!! 2016 has certainly been a year full of ups and downs but it is almost time to say goodbye and with that comes a new year end review!!

Street Fighter V Disappoints

With Street Fighter V being the first fighting game to make it onto a live ESPN broadcast, you would think the series was celebrating an epic return but it was anything short of catastrophic.

While Street Fighter V is certainly considered a competitive success in the eyes of many, it has become a commercial failure something no one at the end of last year ever expected would be the case.

From its initial release, things seemed to look very bleak for the popular fighting game franchise. Ultimately, the release lacked polish as many things that Capcom promised would be in the game had yet to be implemented.

The time Capcom spent on the online beta also seemed to be of no avail as many complained about the online experience being worse than it originally was during testing periods.

Some would say that the mistakes that Capcom made has put this title in a great deal of jeopardy and its ability to climb out of the muck may be impossible but Capcom has continued to stick to their guns about being in it for the long haul.

Early indications of a come back are looking a bit sketchy after season 2’s initial announcement of only 6 additional characters and we can only hope that this is a troll. Capcom definitely needs to come out of the gates running next year as they will only have a competitive leg to stand on if they do not.

More Fighting Games Emerge On The PC!!

Arc System Work’s choice to publish more titles on the Steam PC client may have rubbed off on a few more publishers as the PC’s library continues to grow with titles that we never thought would make it to the platform.

We were shocked when Kohimie Enbu, originally an import only title for the Playstation 4, was announced for the PC with the full western localization bells and whistles!! Not to long after, an announcement was made for Blade Arcus From Shinning but not only would it be getting localized, it would have an online mode as well, something the console import does not have!

Even Mortal Kombat producer Ed Boon made some amends by finally releasing Mortal Kombat XL on PC furthering the hopes of a possible port for his latest endeavor Injustice 2!!

With an updated PC port of Nitroplus Blasterz, the update to Guilty Gear Xrd, and more popular incoming titles coming on their way, the sky seems to be the limit for fighting games one the PC!!

We have certainly been on cloud nine ever since ASW gave us a whammy last year and we are certainly hopeful that there are still some amazing surprises coming the PCs way!

Marvel and Capcom Are Back In The Saddle

When games featuring the Marvel Vs. Capcom series were taken down from the digital market place, we knew dark days were ahead for the franchise.

Disney had acquired Marvel studious and consequently ended the license between Capcom and Marvel which meant no new versus titles for the foreseeable future.

Things grew even more dismal after Disney decided that they would stay in house for game development but not soon after, Disney would turn a new leaf and announce that they would go back to licensing out there IP‘s to third party game developers…thank god.

At every turn after this announcement, Capcom plausibly denied the chance for a return of Mahvel but as the Playstation Experience approached, rumors started to spread about there being a new Marvel Vs. Capcom game.

Then, on that fated day at the Playstation Experience, Sony let the cat out of the bag!! Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite was announced and everything in the world was right..for that short period of time.

Shortly after, they announced an Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 port for the Playstation 4..did I mention it became available during the announcement?! It did.

We are certainly ecstatic to see that Capcom and Marvel have reunited and we certainly hope this means their classic titles will be returning to the digital market place soon.

Whether Marvel decides to stave off some of its differences with Fox for the sake of giving us our beloved X-Men characters is still up in air. None the less, Marvel’s universe has such an expansive choice of characters that you honestly can’t be that heart broken about a few missing icons…I mean, you can if you want to, but Black Panther might be a character is all I’m saying.

Going Into 2017

For better or worse, there was a lot of excitement going into 2016 and 2017 is going to be no different. With current gen titles like Injustice 2, Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite, and the long awaited Tekken 7: Fated Retribution making its way to console, the choices for a new fighting game experience is about to grow exponentially.

We may also be seeing a few new IPs with games like Brawlout making their way to gamers next year making us very curious as to how they will stand up against the big names in the genre.

2017 is certainly going to be a telling year, after all, we are reaching the apex for the current generation of gaming and as such, developers will be vying to keep their player bases engaged in what they have to offer.

Anyway way the cookie crumbles, expect that we here at Fighting Games Online are going to continue to embrace what the new fighting games have to offer to the best of our ability and we hope you will enjoy the ride with us!!
